Pieminister boss dresses as pie for food charity abseil

Tristan Hogg, co-founder and CEO of the much-loved local business Pieminister, took on an unforgettable challenge last week, abseiling Bristol’s Avon Gorge dressed as a pie. It was all in aid of FareShare South West, which rescues food like Pieminister’s at risk of going to waste and shares it with over 380 charities across the region.

Tristan’s iconic costume invented a new flavour of Pieminister’s handy pie: ‘Tris Isn’t Chicken’. He was joined in his descent by nine other keen fundraisers, who together raised a total of £6,168 for FareShare South West – enough for food for over 24,000 meals.

Tristan Hogg, CEO of Pieminister, said:

“All the team at Pieminister are committed to saving good food from waste and making sure more people can have not just enough to eat but also enjoy tasty, healthy food and other support too. That’s why I’m a Trustee at FareShare South West. I see first-hand the lasting impact on local people, from families with young children to older people facing isolation. I’m happy to say I wasn’t chicken! I loved abseiling the gorge and I’d do it again in a heartbeat – though I hear I’ve been nominated for a pie-dive next.”

Georgia Langley, Supporter Care Officer at FareShare South West, said:

The FareShare South West team is so grateful to our fearless fundraisers for taking the leap to help fix a broken food system. It’s unthinkable that over ten billion meals’ worth of food go to waste every year while millions of people go hungry. Thanks to dedicated fundraisers like Tristan, we can rescue that food and get it to people hit hardest by the cost-of-living crisis. We’re incredibly lucky to have Tristan on our board of Trustees, and his commitment to supporting us – becoming a gorge-ous pie to raise funds and awareness – is enormously appreciated.”

Last year, charity FareShare South West rescued enough good-to-eat food from the food industry for 4.14 million meals, sharing it with charities, schools and community hubs from Gloucestershire to Tintagel.

The food waste hierarchy calls for food to feed people first

Food companies are legally obliged to use food to feed people before sending to anaerobic digestion or for animal feed. We help them do that.
